Better Balance for a Better Life

Each of us is an amazing mind-body-spirit system. We feel best when we’re in harmonious balance—we have more energy to do more, we get sick less often—we shine brightly both within and without.

Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”) is a Japanese technique to help your system balance itself. This balance reduces stress, promotes relaxation and healing, and helps increase and focus energy.

Reiki bridges- and flows from the straightforwardly physical towards the more mind-soul-spirit realms of energy work. On its own, Reiki can be satisfying and enriching. When combined with other modalities such as massage, the experience can become more than the sum of its parts.

What is reiki (ˈrā-kē)?

Reiki has a rich tradition and the word itself is filled with history, symbolism, and meaning.

The Japanese kanji for “reiki” — 霊気 — are rich with history and meaning. The first “rei” part (ie, 霊) is often translated simply as spirit, higher power, or wisdom. But the symbol itself actually represents rain + container (including mouth or body) + shaman/guide (and actually it’s a symbol that implies the “work” of “two people.

The second part “ki” (ie, 気) is often translated as life force energy. But the kanji symbolism is actually that of rice surrounded by steam/vapor. This invokes a sense of the breath of life or sustenance.

So, the symbolism and meaning of “reiki” is much richer and more visceral than the common english translations. The imagery is powerful, evocative and apt: Rain falls into us (like containers); with intention, guidance, and balance, our life’s breath flows and grows within us and sustains us and energy disperses outward in all directions—Perfectly steamed rice anyone?

The best way to truly understand what reiki can mean for you is to schedule a session with Johanna and experience the benefits firsthand.
